The ten items that should be in every modern gent's wardrobe

If all you have in your wardrobe is three suits in various shades of grey and black, it's time to think again

The ten items that should be in every modern gent's wardrobe

  • A white formal shirt1. A white formal shirt

Obvious right? But a white shirt isn't just a white shirt - it's down to the cut, fabric, what you pair it with and more. A crisp white shirt under a dark jacket matched with a dark tie exudes classic style - it's simple but never less than effective. For added elegance choose a slim fit in 100 per cent cotton, always tuck in and avoid wearing as a casual look.

  • 2. A linen jacket

Now with added currency thanks to the Brideshead Revisited boom, a linen jacket will always turn heads with its air of laidback elegance. Opt for the heavier Irish rather than Italian linen if you want to stay wrinkle-free and match with other natural fibres in muted tones. Add smart chinos and deck shoes and you're ready to go.

  • A trench coat3. A trench coat

Even since Michael Caine sported one in classic 70s film Get Carter, a gent's double-breasted trench coat has been synonymous with effortless British cool. Traditional beiges and blacks never fail with this autumn/winter essential, with extra detailing and linings creating an individual touch. Avoid accessorising with anything too flashy - you don't want to end up looking like a gangster!

  • 4. A navy suit

With a touch more edge than a charcoal suit, the navy suit brings a dynamic, youthful touch to any man's wardrobe. Extra essential as the jacket can double as a navy blazer, another gent's must-have. Always ensure the suit fits to maximum sharpness - make a few alterations at a good tailor if necessary, it's money well spent.

  • A dinner jacket5. A dinner jacket

There's nothing worse than having to make a last-minute dash for an ill-fitting rented dinner jacket for an important black tie event. Cooler than ever thanks to Daniel Craig's reinvigorated Bond, a smart black tuxedo, a couple of evening shirts (one lay-down and one wing collar) and a silk bow tie are essentials you can't afford to be without.

  • 6. A pair of chinos

A pair of flat-front beige chinos are a lightweight summer necessity for any modern gent's wardrobe - dressy enough for formal occasions and casual enough for a weekend stroll. Pair with a navy blazer for a classic look or a simple white T-shirt and wear with either dress shoes or loafers.

  • A pair of brogues7. A pair of brogues

A pair of leather brogues will never let you down. Now available in a variety of colours, half and quarter-brogue styles and regular and patent leather variations, the brogue has regenerated itself more times than Dr Who - though personally we still have a soft spot for the original, the classic brown full brogue. And we have a lot of time for Tom Baker too.

  • 8. A solid tie

For a versatile style classic you can't go wrong with a solid tie - it will complement any shirt (striped, checked, or solid) - though really you should have a few diagonal striped ties in the closet too for every occasion. If you're feeling bold go for skinny ties, otherwise aim for one around three inches at its widest point.

  • Cashmere sweater9. A cashmere sweater

Now far more affordable than ever before, cashmere still spells luxury and will last years if properly maintained. Pair a V-neck cashmere sweater with a crisp classic white shirt or even wear with a pair of jeans for a sophisticated perennial look.

  • 10. A classic T-shirt

A few classic well-fitting cotton crew-necks are always a wise investment. Ensure you have a couple of solid white and black staples - block colours create a strong, confident look all year round. A thin horizontal stripe tee under a casual jacket never goes out of style - think Lou Reed rather than Popeye.
