Dress to kill, Bond-style

The master of seduction, style and suaveness, James Bond has always been the benchmark of effortless cool. And his dress sense is as sharp as his shooting

  • Daniel CraigDaniel Craig

No Bond has looked more likely to use his licence to kill than Daniel Craig. Gone are the pithy quips and standard Bond lines - you won't be hearing "shaken not stirred" from him - and in their place a brooding menace. His garb is similarly no nonsense says Quantum of Solace costume supervisor Lindsay Pugh, "Daniel is not quite as tongue-in-cheek. He's more real and gritty. So it followed that there wouldn't be any parodies in the costume."

There are echoes of Sean Connery in Craig's sharp, monochrome cuts. Whether he's wearing a T-shirt, tweed three-piece or pair of swimming shorts the lines are straight and to the point. Of course it helps if you have a body like Craig's to hang it all on.

Get the look: It's much easier fighting terrorists in a fitted T-shirt than a suit, and cheaper too.

  • Sean ConnerySean Connery

For many Sean Connery is the definitive Bond. He was smoother than freshly oiled leather, equipped with a deadpan wit and a leisurely smile so seductive it could convince anyone caught within a two-mile radius to go to bed with him. And he had the sartorial style to match.

Connery perfected the knack of appearing as though he'd just stepped out of a Savile Row tailor, whether he was sipping a dry martini or about to be cut in half by a deadly laser. Without fail his suits were sharp, definitely more mod than rocker, and he could pull off all manner of potential clothing catastrophes such as the white dinner jacket and black trouser combo, which is rarely a good look.

Get the look: Buy the narrowest 60s style two-piece suit you can find. Finish the look with a pair of finely polished brogues.

  • Roger MooreRoger Moore

Never has Britain's deadliest weapon looked quite so at home in a pair of flares. It was the 70s so you can forgive Roger Moore for the touch of camp he brought to the role of Bond, but it has been ruthlessly eradicated from today's 007. "Bond was becoming a parody of himself. Daniel Craig is not quite as tongue-in-cheek," says Quantum of Solace costume supervisor Lindsay Pugh.

Still it was courageous of Moore to try and bring a little humour to the secret agent's wardrobe. It wasn't enough simply to thrill the audience, he liked to have the odd fashion frill too and is perhaps best known for his safari suits, a trend he began in Live and Let Die. Strangely it didn't catch on with the other 007s.

Get the look: Accessorise your dinner jacket with an extravagantly trimmed shirt - either that or dress as though you're off to the Serengeti.

  • Pierce BrosnanPierce Brosnan

Unlike most mortals Pierce Brosnan managed to successfully sport the 'difficult' smart casual look. His open necked shirts and slick suits, by Italian fashion house Brioni, complemented the easy-going and quick-witted Bond that Brosnan developed, riding the fine line between standing out style wise and remaining inconspicuous - which is generally the idea if you're a secret agent.

Of course he didn't look bad in black tie either. In fact some may argue Brosnan wore it with more dash than any other 007, no more so than when attempting to seduce media baron Eliot Carver's wife in Tomorrow Never Dies.

Get the look: Couple an Italian suit with a shirt unbuttoned to the chest, then raise your eyebrows in ironic amusement whenever possible.

  • Bond trivia

    Die and let die
There's a reason 007 is known as Britain's deadliest weapon - wherever he goes people end up snuffing it in vast numbers. GoldenEye was particularly deadly - an estimated 237 people kicked the bucket before the end credits rolled.

    Licence to kill a suit
It's dirty work saving the world and sometimes even the finest threads aren't up to it. Daniel Craig got through around 40 suits during filming of Quantum of Solace.

    Monkeyraker
Rumour has it the original script for Dr No had the evil megalomaniac being played by a monkey. Unsurprisingly the producers didn't run with that idea.
